The Milwaukee Brewers tried trading for New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso before last season’s MLB trade deadline. With the offseason in full swing and not many moves being made, Alonso has not yet been signed to a contract extension.
He has one year remaining on his deal and will be a free agent after the 2024 season. Alonso is 29 years old and will turn 30 after next season is over. Are the Mets willing to re-sign to the long-term knowing they won’t compete in 2024?
Well, Tim Healy of Newsday reported last week that it’s “not clear” whether the New York Mets franchise plans on approaching Alonso about an extension this offseason. He wants to stay with the Mets for the long term, but it may be best for the franchise if they were to trade him to a contender sooner rather than later.
It is also possible that he wouldn’t re-sign with the franchise and the Mets should trade him before the 2024 regular season begins. This is why the Milwaukee Brewers should revisit the trade talks with the New York Mets before a team like their rivals, the Chicago Cubs come in and snatch him.
David Stearns works in the New York Mets front office as the President of Baseball Operations and he was in the Milwaukee Brewers front office for several years. Alonso last season with the Mets had a .217 batting average with 46 home runs and 118 RBIs, along with a .318 on-base percentage.
Another reason why New York should trade him is because five of their seven top prospects will not be ready to be called up to the MLB until 2025 at the earliest. The New York Mets should continue stacking up their farm system.
A Pete Alonso Trade to the Milwaukee Brewers to the New York Mets Would Work For Both Parties
Alonso being traded from New York to Milwaukee would make sense for both parties. The Brewers are trying to win a World Series title and the Mets are trying to rebuild its baseball franchise. New York knows they won’t be able to contend in 2024 in the NL East with the Philadelphia Phillies, the Atlanta Braves, and even the Miami Marlins for that matter.
It has to be about 2025 and beyond for the franchise and the Mets need a new young core. Alonso may not be a part of the future plans for the franchise, even though he fills up the seats with the long ball.
Pete Alonso may also be looking for a new contract when traded and that is something general manager Matt Arnold would have to consider when trading for him. They already signed outfielder prospect Jackson Chourio to a long-term deal before even playing a game in the big leagues.
He is the number one prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization and the number two prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB.com right behind shortstop Jackson Holiday of the Baltimore Orioles. Speaking of prospects, the Mets would be able to get more quality prospects from the Brewers in an Alonso deal.
One of the prospects that would be off limits other than Chourio is catcher Jeferson Quero. The Mets don’t need him anyway because of Francisco Alvarez and prospect Kevin Parade. Quero will be the Brewers catcher for a long time and Alvarez is also in contract talks with the Mets.
#3 prospect RHP Jacob Misiorowski, #6 prospect RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez, and #7 prospect 3B Brock Wilken could be the ideal trade for the Mets. New York needs pitching badly and acquiring a third baseman prospect would be ideal for the New York Mets.
Wilken could be the future third baseman because Brett Baty has been inconsistent for the Mets. Their fanbase has the jury out on him still and Ronny Mauricio is out for the 2024 season with a torn ACL. The Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Mets would both benefit for a Pete Alonso trade.
