The Milwaukee Brewers have not started the month of September off on a high note. They are 2-5 over their first seven games that includes three extra inning losses. So far they (likely) have not played a playoff team, the offense is in a slump, and they have some tough competition coming up. Here we gauge how concerning their play over the last week is.
Offense has been the Milwaukee Brewers weakest link to start the month of September.
To begin September the Brewers offense has failed to score two or more runs in three contests. One reason they are not scoring runs is because they have been struggling mightily to get runners on base. Entering play on September 9 Milwaukee is dead last in September team batting average (.169) and on-base percentage (.239).
Despite struggling to get runners on base they have continued to be ultra aggressive on the bases as their 13 stolen bases this month are the second most in the league. Unfortunately this has not been translating into scoring runs as their 26 runs scored are the eighth least during the month of September.
Who do the Milwaukee Brewers face the remainder of the month?
Starting on September 10 the Brewer will begin their final West Coast trip of the year that will feature the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks. They then come home to face the Philadelphia Phillies and then square off with the Diamondbacks again, but this time it will be a four game series. To round out the year they travel to Pittsburgh and then return home to face the New York Mets.
Gauging the concern level surrounding the Milwaukee Brewers current slump?
On a scale of no concern, low concern, medium concern, and high concern I would rate the Brewers September slump as a medium concern. Teams tend to go through offensive slumps and oftentimes it takes a few things to go right in order for a squad to bust out of it. They have still managed to put together long at-bats at times and are remaining true to who they are by running once on base, but the bad news is they will have to try and bust out of this offensive slump by facing almost all playoff contending teams going forward.
Aside from the offense getting going the Brewers do have some weak spots in their bullpen that should get addressed soon. Hoby Milner has struggled in general this year and has not delivered in clutch situations since returning from the injured list. Additionally Bryse Wilson has an ERA north of 4.00 post All-Star break. Recalling Bryan Hudson and adding top pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski is one way the team should consider fixing this problem.
With this poor start to the month the Brewers have slipped to three games back of the Phillies for the #2 seed in the playoffs. Between their current standings and less than ideal level of play the concern level falls in the medium category for me. Hopefully they can turn things around soon.
