The Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners have an extensive trade history and partnership. During the offseason one move that was conducted was a trade that involved Kolten Wong and Jesse Winker. Abraham Toro also was involved in the transaction as an included player with Jesse Winker. With two months of games being played in the 2023 season lets see how these players are performing for their new teams.
Milwaukee Brewers-Seattle Mariners Trade Evaluation: Jesse Winker
The Mariners elected to ship Jesse Winker to Milwaukee after just one season in their uniform. He struggled in 2022, underwent off-season neck and knee surgery, and entered 2023 feeling rejuvenated. Unfortunately his bat is yet to get going.
Having logged 108 at-bats as a Milwaukee Brewer Jesse Winker has a 204/.315/.231 slash line. He has just three extra base hits on the season and is still searching for his first home run. His season wRC+ is just 66. For someone who is being used strictly as a designated hitter these numbers are quite disappointing.
Milwaukee Brewers-Seattle Mariners Trade Evaluation: Abraham Toro
Abraham Toro did not break big league camp with the Brewers and has spent all season in Triple-A. In the minor leagues he has been a steady contributor for the Nashville Sounds and previously had a 31 game on-base streak.
It’s unclear when or if the Brewers plan to utilize Abraham Toro this year. Willy Adames was just placed on the injured list and the team passed on promoting him. The play of Owen Miller and Mike Brosseau is likely blocking him from being called up to the big leagues.
Milwaukee Brewers-Seattle Mariners Trade Evaluation: Kolten Wong
Similar to Jesse Winker, Kolten Wong has been unable to get going at the plate. The Mariners have shifted him to batting ninth in the lineup and he is splitting time with rookie Jose Caballero. To begin the season Wong has a 33 wRC+, a .160/.250/.189 slash line over 120 at-bats.
It’s fair to say that both the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners have not received the production they thought they were getting when this trade was executed. Both Jesse Winker and Kolten Wong are in the final years of their contracts, so their performance this year will largely impact their free agent market value.
