On Thursday, the Milwaukee Brewers made the unfortunate announcement that Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Uecker had passed away at the age of 90. Unbeknownst to most, especially the pubic, the legendary figure known affectionately as Mr. Baseball had been battling lung cancer since 2023.
Despite what the post Alex Rodriguez made may indicate, Uecker only worked for the Brewers as a professional baseball announcer. Throughout the franchise’s history, his voice was the one that called every major moment, every glorified win, and every devastating loss.
After the news of Uecker’s passing, current and former players shared their favorite stories about the beloved announcer and what he meant to them.
Milwaukee Brewers Legend Ryan Braun Says Bob Uecker Made Moments Bigger
Uecker, of course, called Milwaukee’s only World Series appearance, which came all the way back in 1982. After that, they did not make the postseason for 26 long years. In 2008, a young Ryan Braun helped lead the Brewers back to the playoffs along with a young core of exciting players.
When discussing the beloved broadcaster with the media on Thursday, Braun told reporters that his biggest career moments seem so much more significant because Uecker’s voice is connected to them:
Ryan Braun and Brandon Woodruff just spoke about how special it was to have their biggest moments — they called ’08 Cubs and the NLCS homer off Kershaw — called by Bob Uecker.
Braun: “Those moments feel bigger, more special and more meaningful because he was calling them.”

On September 29, 2008, Milwaukee defeated their arch rivals, the Chicago Cubs, to clinch the Wild Card and the team’s first postseason appearance since that aforementioned 1982 World Series appearance. Below, one can watch the final play of the game as called by Uecker.
CC Sabathia threw a complete game and Braun hit a huge two-run home run that ended up being the difference in the 3-1 victory.
As Curt Hogg notes above, Brandon Woodruff identified his home run off of Clayton Kershaw in the 2018 NLCS as the biggest moment of his career, and echoed the sentiment that he considers himself fortunate that it is forever tied to Uecker.
