The Milwaukee Brewers are on the verge of elimination after suffering an 8-4 loss at home in Game 1 of their National League Wild-Card Round series against the New York Mets on Tuesday.
Following Milwaukee’s loss in the series opener, it was shared by manager Pat Murphy that the Brewers will be starting Frankie Montas in Game 2 this Wednesday.
Montas has playoff experience, but his postseason resume isn’t a particularly shiny one. In three postseason appearances for the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees (including a start), Montas has allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts across 6.2 innings. However, five of those runs he allowed came in one game – a loss by the Athletics to the Houston Astros back in 2020.
Milwaukee Brewers starter Frankie Montas’ recent form heading into a crucial start against the New York Mets
As for his recent form, Montas was shaky toward the end of the regular eason. In September, he went 1-2 with a 5.55 ERA in five appearances. He allowed nine earned runs on eight hits (four home runs) in just 6.2 innings over his last two appearances.
For what it’s worth, Montas’ most recent appearance was against the the Mets on Sep. 27 at home where he surrendered only two earned runs (including a home run) on two hits with three walks issued in an 8-4 win Milwaukee.
Overall in the 2024 MLB regular season, Montas went 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA and 1.367 WHIP.
Montas was a trade deadline acquisition this year by the Brewers, who acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds late last July in exchange for Jake Junis, Joey Wiemer, and cash considerations.
