Brewers expressing interest in former Cubs catcher

As the Milwaukee Brewers 40-man roster stands today, just William Contreras and Jeferson Quero are catchers on the roster. Darrien Miller, a veteran of the organization who has been to big league camp in the past, stands as the only non-roster invitee at the moment.

While it’s not uncommon for teams to enter the regular season with just two active catchers, most organizations prefer to have a contingency plan in place. Whether to guard against injury or plan ahead, carrying a third catcher on the 40-man roster is typically the more prudent long-term approach.

That said, Milwaukee reportedly has been expressing interest in free agent catcher Reese McGuire. He is approaching age 31, but had arguably his best offensive season last year under Craig Counsell in Chicago.

According to a report from Chris Cotillo of MassLive, McGuire is garnering interest from the Brewers. He’s been a solid defensive backup throughout his career, maxing out at 89 games played in 2022 between the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox.

Last year, with the Cubs, he played in just 44 games, but belted a career high nine home runs. Behind the dish, he posted 2.6 framing runs while throwing out eight of 31 base-stealers.

Because McGuire finished on Chicago’s 40-man roster last year, he will have opt out clauses if he signs a minor league contract. This doesn’t guarantee him a big league deal by any means, but is something to consider for whichever teams signs him, including the Brewers.
