Eight Milwaukee Brewers players, who had less than three years of MLB service time last season, are bringing home larger pay checks this holiday season thanks to incentive pay from the pre-arbitration bonus pool. William Contreras was the lone player to score more than an extra million dollars, with Jackson Chourio, Joey Ortiz, Brice Turang, Tobias Myers, Garrett Mitchell, Bryan Hudson, and Sal Felick all bringing in less.
What is the pre-arbitration bonus pool?
Under MLB’s latest collective bargaining agreement (CBA), players with fewer than three years of service time are eligible for incentive pay. The total bonus pool is valued at $50 million, with payouts determined by award voting and WAR. Notably, players who have signed long-term extensions, such as Jackson Chourio, remain eligible for these incentive payments.
Who were the top beneficiaries of the 2024 pre-arbitration bonus pool?
100 players in total received bonus pay, with just eight netting more than $1.0 million. The eight players to get more than $1.0 million were Bobby Witt Jr ($3,077,595), Paul Skenes ($2,152,057), Gunnar Henderson ($2,007,178), William Contreras ($1,722,174), Cole Ragans ($1,638,013), Jarren Duran ($1,321,661), Jackson Merrill ($1.191,534), and Luis Gil ($1,098,628).
How much money did the eight Milwaukee Brewers players receive from the pre-arbitration bonus pool?
As mentioned, William Contreras benefited the most as his extra $1.7 million was the fourth highest in the league. Jackson Chourio fell just shy of $1.0 million as he earned an extra $901,335. Every other Brewers player netted less than $500,000 with the exact totals noted below. In total, nearly $4.5 million was distributed to players in Milwaukee’s organization.
- William Contreras ($1,722,174)
- Jackson Chourio ($901,335)
- Joey Ortiz ($427,663)
- Brice Turang ($368,014)
- Tobias Myers ($312,411)
- Garrett Mitchell ($254,824)
- Bryan Hudson ($246,858)
- Sal Frelick ($232,549)
Interestingly, Sal Frelick received the smallest bonus of any MLB player this year, despite winning a Gold Glove award. Unfortunately, the pre-arbitration incentive pool doesn’t factor in Gold Glove honors, with payouts instead based on awards like MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, and All-MLB team selections
