Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Gus Varland was hit by a scary comebacker during Saturday afternoon’s game. During the eighth inning San Diego Padre slugger Manny Machado hit a 105 MPH ball right back at him. Varland was removed from the game and has since been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right hand contusion.
Below is a video of the play where Gus Varland was hit by a comebacker off the bat of Manny Machado.

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Gus Varland requests a bottle of wine from Manny Machado after a scary comebacker.
Following the game, Manny Machado reached out to Gus Varland. Per Varland’s request, he is receiving a bottle of Merlot wine from the player who smacked the ball directly back at him.
Gus Varland no worse for wear after yesterday’s scary moment.
Manny Machado reached out and is sending a bottle of wine to Varland as a mea culpa. “Merlot,” is what Varland requested.

As mentioned above, Gus Varland did end up on the 15-day IL after sustaining a hand contusion during this play. At live speed it looks like things could have been much worse, so hopefully it will be a minimum length stay away from baseball for him.
