During the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres series in mid-April a Brewers pitcher took a line drive off his hand. The scary moment could have been much worse, so thankfully a hand contusion was the only physical injury that was sustained. After rehabilitation appearances with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Nashville Sounds, Gus Varland is back with the team and will be activated as needed.

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Gus Varland will be activated as needed.
Adam McCalvy has reported that Gus Varland will be activated as needed. Per the Rule-5 draft rules the 26 year old has to remain on the Brewers active roster once activated otherwise Milwaukee has to offer him back to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s unclear at this time how long he will remain with the team before being activated.
During his rehab appearances Varland threw 5.2 innings, allowed seven earned runs, and walked five batters. In Triple-A Nashville he surrendered two home runs while also hitting a batter.
During his first appearance with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers he had a comebacker hit right at him after his second pitch of his rehab stint was thrown. Having two scary incidences like this can create a mental obstacle that is hard to overcome.
With the Brewers this season Varland has a 2.70 ERA over 6.2 innings pitched. He has increased his velocity as a reliever and his slider developed into a lethal weapon during spring training this year. It will be interesting to see how he performs once activated.
