The Milwaukee Brewers reached the end of the road of their 2024 MLB campaign in an especially painful way. Just when it looked like they were going to complete a successful come-from-behind series victor in the Wild Card Round against the New York Mets, the Brewers faltered, suffering a 4-2 defeat in Game 3 on Thursday night.
The Brewers entered the ninth inning with a 2-0 lead and with the always-reliable Devin Williams looking to close it out. But Williams ran into trouble.
He allowed Francisco Lindor walk and to open things up in the ninth frame. After striking out Mark Vientos, Williams allowed a single to Brandon Nimmo that advanced Lindor to third base. Then came Pete Alonso, who lifted a booming three-run home run to put the Mets in front by a run. Williams later hit Jesse Winker with a pitch before Starling Marte had a single RBI to extend the Mets’ lead.
Milwaukee Brewers’ 2024 MLB season ends in heartbreak
After the game, Brewers manager Pat Murphy expressed how proud he is of his team but also admitted the pain of the loss.
Via Brewers beat writer Adam McCalvy of MLB.com:
Pat Murphy said he loves this team and will never be able to duplicate 2024. “This feels like a tragedy,” he said.
The Brewers lost Game 1 of the Mets series, 8-4, but fought back in Game 2, with Jackson Chourio and Garrett Mitchell giving Milwaukee a spark. In Game 3, the Brewers broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning with a solo home run from Jake Bauers followed by another solo blast by Sal Frelick. Milwaukee was smelling victory at that point, but things simply didn’t go their way.
The Brewers went 93-69 in the 2024 MLB regular season to win the National League Central Division for the second year in a row.
