After a slump that saw them lose seven of eight games, the St. Louis Cardinals have shown signs of life of late, having won the final two games of their series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cards beat the Brewers on Wednesday in the 10th inning, thanks to a Nolan Arenado walk-off home run. On Thursday, the Cardinals took down Milwaukee anew to the tune of a 3-0 score.
“That’s a team with nothing to lose,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said of the Cardinals following his team’s loss in the series finale at Busch Stadium, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).
The Brewers just couldn’t generate any offense to support their pitching. Freddy Peralta had a solid outing, allowing zero earned runs and only three hits with two walks and a couple of strikeouts in five innings of work on the mound. Where Milwaukee faltered with their pitching was when Nick Mears gave up three earned runs on three hits in the seventh inning.
As for the Cardinals, they are on a groove again. While the Brewers are still very much ahead of them in the division, the Cards gained some ground in the race for a wild card spot in the National League.
With the loss, the Brewers dropped to 73-54 and are now on a two-game losing skid after winning six games in a row, including the series opener versus the Cardinals. Nevertheless, Milwaukee remains comfortably ahead of their rivals in the National League Central, with 10 games between them and the rest of the division.
Coming up next for Milwaukee is a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics that begins this Friday. Aaron Civale, who is 4-8 with a 4.78 ERA so far in the 2024 MLB regular season will start in that series opener, while the A’s will get the ball to JP Sears (10-8, 4.15 ERA)
