Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers did not perform very well on the plate during Saturday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds. In fact, he struck out not just once but four times in the entire contest. Still, Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy sees Bauers as one of the heroes in his team’s 5-4 win over the Reds.
Via the Associated Press (h/t ESPN):
Williams issued two walks and hit TJ Friedl with a pitch before first baseman Jake Bauers made a diving stop of Ty France’s hard grounder for the final out. Bauers struck out four times but made the big play at the end.
“He’s got the Sombrero, good thing he didn’t wear it out to the field,” Murphy said. “It shows you, you can strike out four times and still have a huge effect on the game.”
Brewers closer Devin Williams had trouble getting the job done in the ninth inning, as he loaded the bases before Cincinnati’s Ty France got his turn at the plate France made contact with the ball on Williams’ fifth offering, but Bauers, fortunately for the Brewers, was there to save the day defensively.
Jake Bauers not hitting well in 2024
On the season, Bauers is batting just 200/.306/.380, hitting 11 home runs and recording 40 RBIs. He has one of the highest strikeouts in the big leagues today. Bauers’ 34.4 percent strikeout rate is the eighth highest among all players in MLB this season thus far with at least 250 plate appearances.
The Brewers can complete a sweep of the Reds this Sunday when Milwaukee gets Tobias Myers the ball.
