The Milwaukee Brewers are in a bit of a funk as the All-Star break draws near. They have lost six out of their last 10 games and after going 3-4 on a west coast trip against the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers they began the start of a six game home stand by losing in blowout fashion to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Following Monday’s 12-2 loss manager Pat Murphy issued the perfect statement.
Monday, July 9: Milwaukee Brewers 2, Pittsburgh Pirates 12.

Against the Pirates on Monday the final box score indicates a blowout but this game was tightly contested until the sixth inning. Brewers starter Colin Rea got tagged with seven earned runs with five going against him in the sixth inning. In the sixth inning the Pirates loaded the bases via three straight singles and a possible double play ball was hit at third baseman Vinny Capra but he was unable to handle it. The play was initially ruled an error on Capra, but then changed to a base hit later on following reliever Bryse Wilson surrendering a grand slam.
In relief Bryse Wilson was tagged with just one earned run, Hoby Milner one earned run, and then Joel Payamps three earned runs. Pittsburgh slugged five home runs all together that included a solo blast from former Brewer Rowdy Tellez.
Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy had the perfect response after this blowout loss.

Post game manager Pat Murphy provided his thoughts on the loss and the grind of a 162 game baseball season. Jack Stern of Brewer Fanatic reported the following quote from Murphy, “We’ve got to get back to how we win games. It’s draining. It’s tough. I still love the team and I love how they play. I didn’t love tonight. I think you have to wash it off and kind of review why you’re in the spot you’re in.”
The first half of the Milwaukee Brewers season has been a success.

Pat Murphy’s post game comments were alluding to reviewing why the Brewers are in the position they are in overall. They have a 53-39 record and have been in first place in the National League Central division for nearly 100 days (98 as of July 9). No team wants to limp into the All-Star break, but rough patches do occur during the season and Murphy’s comment suggests that they need to get back to doing all the little things well in order to grind out more wins.
Milwaukee has five games remaining prior to the All-Star break. Winning series against both the Pirates and Washington Nationals would be a step back in the right direction for the Brewers.
