Former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell and current bench coach Pat Murphy have quite the history together. Pat Murphy managed Craig Counsell at Notre Dame when he was their head coach and then he joined the Brew Crew in 2016. This was a season after Craig Counsell took over the managerial reigns for the Brew Crew.
Since 2016 Pat Murphy has been Craig Counsell’s right hand man. He knows the way Craig Counsell operates, he knows the ins and outs to the Brewers organization, and he has stepped in as the manager at times when Craig Counsell was unavailable or ejected from a ballgame.
All this being said, Pat Murphy immediately slots in as an internal candidate to fill the Brewers managerial opening. According to a report from Tom Verducci at Sports Illustrated Milwaukee will interview him for that job later today on Tuesday, November 7. Tom Verducci also dropped some other news that Pat Murphy is expected to be offered a spot on the Chicago Cubs coaching staff.
Milwaukee Brewers current bench coach Pat Murphy is expected to be offered a spot on the Chicago Cubs coaching staff.
During a press conference yesterday Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio indicated that all of the Brewers coaches were under contract and were returning for 2024. It’s unclear if the Cubs can technically speak or offer Pat Murphy a job on their staff with Craig Counsell, but Tom Verducci believes that this is expected.
If Pat Murphy stays with the Brewers he could return in 2024 as the bench coach or their manager. He has MLB experience managing as he previously was the interim manager for the San Diego Padres. Between his prior work experiences and time spent in Milwaukee’s organization he should be considered a strong favorite to take over for Craig Counsell as manager.
