The Milwaukee Brewers may have suffered their second straight loss in the spring training but it is all about building good habits. Players can learn a thing or two from what William Contreras pledged to do this season.

Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras (24) talks with a teammate during spring training workouts Monday, February 17, 2025, at American Family Fields of Phoenix in Phoenix, Arizona.

The two-time All-Star revealed to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that he has been making it a habit to wake up at 3:00 am this season as he tries to reach a new level.

That is a very welcome sight whether you are a fan of the Brewers or not. Contreras already created history last season when he became the first Brewers catcher to start in the All-Star Game.

    It shows he remains hungry.

“Some prospects asked me, ‘Why are you here so early?’ Because I want to be one of the best in The Show,” he said.

It is also a good sign in relation to his contract. Contreras and the Brewers reached a one-year deal, which includes a club option for 2026, in order to avoid arbitration.

Contreras is one of the players being counted on as the main guys to help the go a long way in the playoffs this season.

Pat Murphy doubles down on praise of William Contreras

Murphpy previously compared Contreras to nine-time All-Star Justin Verlander for his brilliance in at-bats.

“Relentless. Resilient. And poised. It was just really special. One of the best at-bats I’ve seen live,” he said last week.

The praise was about the skill. Murphy’s latest comment is on the Venezuelan catcher’s mentality, something he said that makes the player special.

Milwaukee Brewers head coach Pat Murphy tells a story during a press conference before the Tuesday Milwaukee Brewers National League Wild Card playoff series at American Family Field in Milwaukee on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024.

“He’s special. His commitment to being great is high,” Murphy said.

“It takes more than that, too. It takes the mental commitment. I think he’s getting there. It’s a good sign that he wants to get out here early and play baseball.”
