The Milwaukee Brewers had high hopes of completing a sweep of the Oakland Athletics on the road, but they simply failed on that mission. The Brewers suffered a 4-3 loss to the A’s on the road on Sunday to come up short of a three-game sweep. Before that game, Milwaukee beat the Athletics in the first two games of the series via a combined score of 20-8.
Gary Sanchez put the Brewers ahead early with a two-run home run in the second inning, but Milwaukee was not able to score a run again until the seventh inning when Willy Adames hit a solo blast to cut Oakland’s lead down to one.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy lamented his team’s inability to generate consistent production at the plate in the series finale. Milwaukee only had four hits in the entire contest. The Brewers also drew just two walks. The usual small-ball formula for the Brewers just did not show up for them.
“Once we got ahead 2-0, we didn’t do the job of putting the ball in play the right way,” Murphy said after the game, per Eric He of the Associated Press. “You’re going to lose major league games if you don’t do that.”
Frankie Montas picked up a pitching loss as well. He allowed four earned runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in six innings of action.
Milwaukee Brewers to face the San Francisco Giants next
Coming up next for the Brewers is another three-game set against a West Coast club, but this time they will be back home, as Milwaukee plays hosts to the San Francisco Giants. That series will open this Tuesday, with the Brewers scheduled to give the ball to Tobias Myers, who is 6-5 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.14 ERA so far in the 2024 MLB regular season.
