Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell sustained a shoulder injury in extra innings against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday April 18, 2023. He injured his shoulder sliding into third base in the top of the 10th inning and was removed in the bottom of the inning after making a hard throw to home plate.
Following the game Mitchell indicated that he felt his shoulder subluxate. This is when the bones of a joint shift but do not fully dislocate. The Brewers placed him on the injured list the next day and he had an MRI performed. Unfortunately the MRI has shown significant damage to the labrum, which is the lining of the shoulder joint.
Per Craig Counsell, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell’s season is in jeopardy and surgery is likely. He will, however, seek a second opinion.

Garrett Mitchell has indicated that he will fly to Los Angeles on Monday to get another opinion. He did indicate in an interview that surgery could be as soon as that Tuesday if it is again recommended.

Here’s more on what Mitchell had to say about the news he received, “What I felt and what I found out are two different things. I don’t feel that bad, but what I heard is obviously not good. I don’t know exactly what I’m feeling yet, but just trying to stay positive.”
As mentioned above, a more definitive answer as to if Garrett Mitchell will have surgery on his shoulder or not shoulder be revealed by Monday.
