Had Devin Williams been as effective on the mound Wednesday night as usual, the Milwaukee Brewers would likely be now on the verge of sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals. Williams struggled mightily in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game, allowing the Cardinals to overcome a two-run deficit before St. Louis closed it out with a walk-off home run from Nolan Arenado in the 10th frame.
Despite his letdown performance, Williams still got the respect of manager Pat Murphy, who was tossed out of the contest in the ninth inning for arguing.
“He is one of the best in the game,” Murphy said of Williams. “It happens and he didn’t get much help obviously,” per Joe Harris of the Associated Press.
Williams allowed two earned runs and three walks on 31 pitches through 0.2 innings. Trevor Megill was called on to replace Williams on the mound, but that did not turn out to be a very fine decision for the Brewers, as he issued two walks before letting Aronado tee off of him for the game-winning home run that had the Cardinals running away with a 10-6 win.
The loss to the Cards was just the first for the Brewers in seven games. Williams’ blown save was also his first of the season.
Milwaukee will attempt to recover right away this Thursday in the series finale at Busch Stadium. The Brewers will have Freddy Peralta starting for them, while the Cardinals will have Milles Mikolas toeing the rubber.
After the St. Louis series, the Brewers will head to the West Coast for a three-game series versus the Oakland Athletics that kicks off on Sunday.
