The 2018 Milwaukee Brewers squad that finished a game away from reaching the World Series had some exciting players on it. Selected to the All-Star game that year was Lorenzo Cain, Jeremy Jeffress, Christian Yelich, Jesus Aguilar, and Josh Hader.
Currently Christian Yelich remains the only player still in a Brewers uniform. Lorenzo Cain has since gone on to retire, Jeremy Jeffress has not thrown in the big leagues since 2020, and both Jesus Aguilar and Josh Hader were traded. Hader is currently pitching for the San Diego Padres. Jesus Aguilar signed a one year, $3 million contract with the Oakland Athletics during the off-season. Unfortunately he was designated for assignment on Memorial Day.
Former Milwaukee Brewers All-Star Jesus Aguilar has been DFA’d by the Oakland Athletics.
The Oakland Athletics decision on Jesus Aguilar came after 115 plate appearances. During that time the big man was slashing .221/.281/.385 with five home runs and an 89 OPS+. He is just two seasons removed from a 22 home run and 93 RBI season that he had with the Miami Marlins, so it’s possible that he could contribute in a meaningful way to a contending team.
At this point in his career Jesus Aguilar could fit in as a platoon player. There is over a 100 point difference in batting average between right-handed and left-handed pitchers. Additionally his season OPS against southpaws in 2023 is .882 whereas against right-handed hitters it drops to .456.
Over the next week the Oakland Athletics will have one week to trade him or another team can claim him off waivers. If neither of those happen he likely will become a free agent.
