The Milwaukee Brewers dropped the first game of their three-game weekend series against the Miami Marlins by the score of 5-1. All-Star ace Freddy Peralta, who had won each of his past seven starts, pitched five innings of one-run ball, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out nine. But while he pitched well enough to put the Brewers in a position to win, the offense was, once again, stagnant and the bullpen had an uncharacteristically hard time getting outs.
Aaron Ashby got the loss after pitching 1.1 innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk. Nick Mears, too, had a difficult time, going 0.2 innings while giving up a hit, three runs (two earned), and two walks. Grant Anderson and Tobias Myers each pitched scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth innings.
Indeed, is was a very flawed performance, and one pitcher’s determination to pitch through injury may have cost Milwaukee the game.
Milwaukee Brewers Reliever Nick Mears Hurt His Back, but Didn’t Tell Anyone

After the game, Brewers manager Pat Murphy made a startling revelation. Mears, who struggled mightily (as described above) wrenched his back during his warmup tosses in the bullpen. He did not, however, tell anyone because he thought he could pitch through it.
Murph shared in his post game comments that Nick Mears “wrenched his back” on his last throw in the bullpen before coming in and thought he could pitch through it so he didn’t tell anyone until after he came out of the game.

The nature and extent of Mears’ injury is not yet known, but it would not be surprising if he has go on the injured list. This would be a less than ideal situation, especially with the trade deadline coming up and Milwaukee already in the market for a bat.
Mears’ appearance on Friday was his 45th game of the season, which ranks third on the team behind Abner Uribe (49 games) and Jared Koenig (48 games). His rough showing caused his ERA to rise from 2.54 to 2.95 on the season.
