Another Milwaukee Brewers Pitcher to Start 2025 on IL; Bullpen Depth Thins

Earlier this week, it was reported that Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher, Tobias Myers, would start the 2025 MLB season on the injured list. Fortunately, it will not be a long stint and he is expected to return in April. Myers was pulled from his latest Spring Training start after hurting his oblique. An MRI revealed a strain, though not one as serious as manager Pat Murphy had feared.

And on Tuesday, it was revealed that another pitcher, Nick Mears, will also start the 2025 season on the injured list. Like Myers, he is not expected to be out long. However, his unavailability for the start of the year makes Milwaukee’s already thin depth at pitcher even thinner.

Milwaukee Brewers Pitcher Nick Mears Is Going on IL After a Tough Illness

Last week, it was reported that Mears, who figured to be a part of Milwaukee’s bullpen this season, had been unavailable for several days due to an illness. When he finally felt well enough to return to the team, he had lost nine pounds.

On Tuesday, Brewers insider Adam McCalvy revealed that he will start the 2025 MLB season on the injured list:

Brewers reliever Nick Mears will open the season on the IL. He was seriously ill last week and just got back on the mound yesterday. Metrics were all good, he said, but he will need a series of bullpens and sim games to get back to game-ready.

As McCalvy notes, Mears needs to get his strength and stamina back after such a tolling illness. With the regular season starting in less than two weeks, he simply does not have time to get back to where he needs to be before Opening Day.

Mears joins a plethora of other Brewers pitchers who are currently injured: Myers, Aaron Ashby, and DL Hall. Additionally, newly signed starting pitcher Jose Quintana will not be ready to pitch full games by the start of the season because he signed with Milwaukee late into Spring Training.
