The bullpen hasn’t been so effective of late for the Milwaukee Brewers, who once again shot themselves in the foot with poor pitching on Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals, particularly from reliever Nick Mears. The game was scoreless until Mears toed the rubber in the seventh inning.
After getting Tommy Pham to pop out, Mears allowed a single to Victor Scott and another single to Masyn Winn. Then Mears surrendered a one-run single to Alec Burleson. After Mears gave up a bases-loaded walk to Willson Contreras, the Cardinals scored another run under his watch from Winn. Mears’ night ended after that, with Bryse Wilson replacing him.
Mears allowed Contreras to walk on a 3-2 count despite the pitcher being ahead of the count 2-0.
Following the 3-0 loss to the Cardinals, Mears shared his thoughts on his battle with Contreras and admitted that he has to improve.
“I think I might have caved a little bit after the checked swing,” Mears said after the game, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). “I thought that he went but in the end, I’m out there to make pitches. I might have gotten caught up in the moment. I need to be better at that. At this level, if you’re not improving, you’re not getting any better.”
Mears started his campaign in the 2024 MLB regular season with the Colorado Rockies before he got traded to the Brewers ahead of the deadline last July for Bradley Blalock and Yujanyer Herrera. In 11 appearances for the Brewers, Mears has compiled just a 6.75 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP through 10.2 innings.
