The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cleveland Guardians 2-0 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 72-52 on the season. Now a season-high 20 games over .500, Milwaukee leads the National League Central Division by 11 games over the St. Louis Cardinals and 11.5 games over the Chicago Cubs. Colin Rea improved to 11-4 after throwing seven shutout innings. Bryan Hudson and Jared Koenig completed the shutout, with Koenig picking up his first career save.
He is the 11th Brewers pitcher to record a save this season.
As one can tell by the score, offense was hard to come by for both teams. Milwaukee scored both of their runs in the first and second innings with timely hitting. However, they were only able to muster six hits all game.
Milwaukee Brewers Outfielder Jackson Chourio Got Hit in the Hand by a Pitch
On scary moment for the Brewers during the game when their young outfielder, Jackson Chourio, got hit in the hand by a pitch. With Christian Yelich already out for the season after back surgery and Blake Perkins on the injured list, Chourio has become an even bigger part of Milwaukee’s everyday lineup.
Fortunately, he avoided any major injury and was able to stay in the game. He also stole his 17th base of the season, but did not record a hit.
For the season thus far, Chourio is hitting .270/.316/.437 with 15 home runs, 53 RBI, 58 runs scored, and 17 stolen bases. He has been especially good since June 1, slashing .335/.380/.541 during that span.
His production as of late has certainly shown the baseball world why the Brewers were so willing to give a massive 10-year contract to a 20-year-old player who had not played in any Major League games up to that point.
Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Pokes Fun at Jackson Chourio’s Age After the 2-0 Win
When Chourio got hit in the hand on Sunday, Brewers manager Pat Murphy came out to make sure that he was okay. Obviously, he was and remained in the game.
After the game, Murphy joked with reporters that the only reason he went out there was because Chourio is so young. According to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Murphy quipped, “Well, I’ve never been on the field for an injury yet this year, until now. But the only reason I was out there is because he’s under 21. If you’re over 21, it’s got to be blood or bone.”
Apparently, there is no worry about Chourio’s hand being sore going forward.
