The Milwaukee Brewers are a season-best 20 games over .500 with a record of 72-52 following their 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday afternoon. The win was Milwaukee’s fifth in a row with all victories coming over first place teams. The Brewers took the final two games of their series against the National League West Division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers and completed a three-game sweep of the American League Central Division-leading Guardians.
Milwaukee’s own division lead has been extended to 11 games thanks to the St. Louis Cardinals falling to the Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs losing 1-0 to the Toronto Blue Jays.
The shutout victory over the Guardians also gave the Brewers an incredible 10-3 record in their last 13 games, incredible because those 13 games were all played on consecutive days.
Milwaukee Brewers Starter Colin Rea Took a No-Hitter into the Sixth Inning
The Brewers may only have scored two runs, but they were all the support right-handed starter Colin Rea needed. Code Red, as manager Pat Murphy calls Rea, threw seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two hit batters. He recorded five strikeouts and no walks.
Rea’s performance earned him the win, improving his season record to 11-4. He also lowered his season ERA from 3.72 to 3.52.
Bryan Hudson came in for Rea in the eighth inning after the Brewers’ starter hit Jhonkensy Noel for the second time. The Brewers’ dynamic left-handed reliever retired all three batters that he faced.
With closer Devin Williams unavailable, another lefty, Jared Koenig, was brought in for the ninth inning. Koenig, too, retired all three batters that he faced, earning his first career save.
The Milwaukee Brewers Were Able to Manufacture Their 2 Runs
Milwaukee’s offense was able to muster two runs early in the game against Guardians starter Ben Lively. Second baseman Brice Turang, who had two hits and a walk, led off the Brewers’ half of the first inning with a triple. After Jackson Chourio and William Contreras failed to bring him home, Willy Adames hit a two-strike, two-out single to score him.
The next inning, Sal Frelick advanced to third base on a perfectly executed hit-and-run with Joey Ortiz at the plate. He then scored on an Eric Haase groundout.
Garrett Mithcell was the only other Brewers player to record a hit on Sunday.
Up Next for the Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers finally have an off day on Monday before starting a six-game road trip. They will play three games against the St. Louis Cardinals before heading out west for a three-game interleague series with the Oakland A’s.
Next week, Milwaukee will return home for a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants before heading back on the road for a four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.
With their win today and the Cardinals’ loss, the Brewers’ magic number to clinch the division is down to 28 with 38 games left to play.
