Milwaukee Brewers fans, along with fans all around baseball, were pleasantly surprised by the news that umpire Angel Hernandez had decided to suddenly retire. First reported by Bob Nightengale, Hernandez’s decision is effective immediately. Over the years, Hernandez has been involved in dozens of on-field arguments with players and managers due to his inconsistent strike zone.
Per Nightengale, “Hernandez worked only 10 games last season because of a back injury, but he missed 161 calls, according to Umpire Auditor.”
Nightengale reports that Hernandez wants to spend more time with his family.
Former Milwaukee Brewers Pitcher CC Sabathia Has a Hilarious Reaction to Angel Hernandez Retiring

CC Sabathia may have only spent half a season of his 19-year Major League career in Milwaukee, but he is still an important part of the team’s history. The trade for Sabathia in 2008 helped propel the Brewers to the Wild Card and their first postseason appearance since 1982.
In 17 games with Milwaukee, Sabathia was 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA, seven complete games, and three shutouts.
When he heard that Hernandez was retiring, Sabathia quote-Tweeted a video of him criticizing Hernandez’s umpiring with a Looney Toons GIF:

In the video, which was of an interview Sabathia did during his time with the New York Yankees, the former Cy Young Award winner said, “I do need to say this, though. I don’t think Angel Hernandez should be umping playoff games. He was terrible today. He is always terrible. He is terrible behind the plate. He is terrible at first base.”
These were the same sentiments that many players, coaches, and fans had regarding Hernandez during his career.
A Clip of a Milwaukee Brewers Win over the Philadelphia Phillies Goes Viral After Angel Hernandez Retirement News Breaks

After the news of Hernandez’s retirement broke, there were a wide variety of videos shared on social media of him missing calls. One of the most popular ones was this outburst from Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber who, apparently, struck out looking against former Brewers closer Josh Hader:
Kyle Schwarber ripping Angel Hernandez to shreds is still one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever watched.

As seen in the video, Schwarber accuses Hernandez of missing calls for both teams.
Brewers insider Curt Hogg shared on X that Omar Narvaez’s first words out of the locker room were “I’m not gonna say he was good. Because he wasn’t.”
Apparently, very few thought differently.
