From 2015 to 2023, the Milwaukee Brewers were managed by Craig Counsell. During his time with the Brewers, the club was able to make the postseason five times, which includes a National League Championship Series appearance in 2018 when Milwaukee fell just a win short of making it to the World Series.
Then in 2023, Counsell left the team for the same job with the Chicago Cubs. That move didn’t sit well with a lot of Milwaukee fans, especially since the Cubs are a chief rival of Milwaukee in the National League Central division.
Pat Murphy shares thoughts on Brewers fans’ feelings on Craig Counsell
In a recent appearance on “The Show” podcast hosted by Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman, Murphy was asked if he thinks Brewers fans will ever forgive Counsell.
“I think that people respect Couns [Counsell],” Murphy said.
I think that’s the thing to do. Come to the stadium and boo him and be part of that whole thing. I think it’s a fun thing. I think Wisconsin needs that. I think that’s cool. You know what I mean? Everybody needs a little New York in them.”
When Counsell left the Brewers, Murphy was eventually promoted as manager. Before getting the managerial role in Milwaukee, Murphy spent years as part of Counsell’s coaching staff.
In nine years with the Brewers, Counsell gathered a managerial record of 707-625 through 1,332 games.
Murphy’s Brewers and Counsell’s Cubs are currently the top two teams in the NL Central standings. Milwaukee has a nine-game lead over the rest of the division after 141 contests, to date.
