If the 2024 MLB season taught the Milwaukee Brewers anything, it is that they cannot ever have enough starting pitchers. Brandon Woodruff, who missed most of 2023 with a shoulder injury, missed all of last season as he recovered from surgery. Wade Miley made two starts before his season ended with Tommy John surgery. Robert Gasser, who made both team and MLB history when he got called up last season, will be out until August of 2025 after needing surgery himself.
DL Hall, Aaron Ashby, Joe Ross, and Jakob Junis all missed significant time with injuries as well.
By the time the season ended, Milwaukee had used 17 different pitchers as starters or openers, among the most in the Majors.
The Milwaukee Brewers Will Have a New-Look Starting Rotation in 2025
As was the case last season, the Brewers starting rotation will be headlined by ace Freddy Peralta, who started a career-high 32 games while going 11-9 with a 3.68 ERA in 2024. Tobias Myers, who burst on the scene as a rookie last year, started 25 games and went 9-6 with a 3.00 ERA.
Aaron Civale, who was acquired midseason from the Tampa Bay Rays, started 14 games and went 6-3 with a 3.53 ERA after arriving in Milwaukee. Prior to the trade, he started 17 games for the Rays and went 2-6 with a 5.07 ERA.
2025 is Civale’s last season of club control before he hits free agency.
Since the start of the offseason, though, the Brewers have parted ways with Colin Rea, Frankie Montas, Bryse Wilson, Miley, and Ross. Montas signed with the New York Mets, Wilson with the Chicago White Sox, and the other three remain free agents.
Nestor Cortes was acquired from the New York Yankees in the Devin Williams trade to provide some depth, but Milwaukee still has work to do in order to be comfortable with the number of starting pitchers that they have.
The Milwaukee Brewers Could Sign 3x Cy Young Award Winner Max Scherzer
While the Brewers certainly have enough starting pitchers to fill out a five-man rotation, they do not have the depth the need to compete over a 162-game season. For this reason, Patrick McAvoy of Sports Illustrated suggests that the team go after three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, who is predicted to get a one-year $15 million deal in free agency this offseason:
“If the Brewers want to add a key piece, it could make sense to add another starting pitcher and Max Scherzer could be that guy. He’s 40 years old now and is nearing the end of his big league career, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him pitch at least one more year.”
Scherzer was only able to make nine starts for the Texas Rangers last season, and went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. In 2023, he made 27 starts for the Mets and Rangers, going 13-6 with a 3.77 ERA.
In 2022, playing for the Mets, he made 23 starts and went 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA.
Scherzer is one of just seven players to have won the Cy Young Award in both the American League and National League. He won it in AL while with the Detroit Tigers in 2013 and won two in the NL (2016 and 2017) while pitching for the Washington Nationals.
He has a career record of 216-112 and a 3.16 career ERA.
