Several former Milwaukee Brewers players have been in the news lately. Stephen Vogt has been linked to two manager openings, Martin Maldonado was said to have the best shot at going straight into a managers role, Erik Kratz is enjoying a role on Foul Territory TV, and now Matt Wise has accepted a new position. His new job will be as a bullpen coach with the Chicago White Sox.
Matt Wise, former Milwaukee Brewers reliever from 2004-2007, is the new bullpen coach for the Chicago White Sox.
Across four seasons Matt Wise covered 215 innings in a Brewers uniform. With Milwaukee he had a 3.93 with his best season coming in 2005 when he threw 64.1 innings and had a 3.36 ERA. After leaving Milwaukee he played for the New York Mets in 2008 and did not have any big league appearances after that season.
Once done playing Matt Wise spent a substantial amount of time in the Los Angeles Angels organization. In total he spent a dozen years with the Angels and eventually worked his way up to bullpen coach in 2020 and then pitching coach from 2021-2023.
As the pitching coach for the Angels the results were mixed. In 2021 Los Angeles finished 22nd in ERA, ninth in 2022, and then 23rd in 2023. He’s worked with a lot of different players including Shohei Ohtani, Patrick Sandoval, Reid Detmers, José Suarez, Noah Syndergaard, and briefly this year Lucas Giolito.
The Angels are currently searching for a manager. This allowed Matt Wise to interview for jobs elsewhere. In Chicago he will be replacing Curt Hasler, who has been reassigned within the White Sox organization.
