Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold made just two acquisitions (RHP Nick Mears and RHP Frankie Montas) in the days leading up to the July 30 trade deadline. He additionally added starting pitcher Aaron Civale earlier in the month. One position he did not address was offense as he did not add a bat despite numerous reports indicating that they were seeking a left-handed hitter.
GM Matt Arnold revealed one big factor as to why he did not acquire a hitter prior to the July 30 trade deadline.
Per Adam McCalvy at MLB.com Matt Arnold provided the following quote as to why he did not acquire a hitter, “Ultimately, we decided that the team we have here offensively, was a group that we like a lot. We certainly did explore alternatives there.” Arnold went on to say that letting the team’s young hitters play was also “a big factor”.
Who are the Milwaukee Brewers young hitters?
In 2023 the Brewers called up several “freshmen” and gave them consistent playing time. Brice Turang, Joey Wiemer, and Sal Frelick were the main players that they relied upon but Blake Perkins also carved out a role. This year Wiemer had been in Triple-A and was most recently traded to the Cincinnati Reds, but guys like Garrett Mitchell (just returned from injury), Jackson Chourio, and Joey Ortiz have been added into the mix.
How has the Milwaukee Brewers offense performed in 2024?
The Brewers young hitters have been playing a great brand of baseball this year. They are not afraid to hit, see lots of pitches by fouling off touches pitches, and are aggressive on the bases. As a team on July 30 they ranked sixth in batting average (.254), third in walks (391), ninth in runs scored (506), and third in stolen bases (139).
With less than 60 games to go in the 2024 regulars season it will be interesting to see how the Brewers young hitters perform down the stretch.
