Milwaukee Brewers Sign Light-Hitting Veteran Outfielder to Minor League Deal Ahead of 2025

The Milwaukee Brewers are seeing their outfield depth tested early. Before they even have played a Spring Training game, one of their key outfielders is going to be out until least May. Blake Perkins, who was a Gold Glove finalist in 2024, fouled a pitch off of his shin during a live batting practice session against Freddy Peralta.

He suffered a fracture in his shin and is out for 3-4 weeks. Brewers manager Pat Murphy said that, barring any setbacks, Perkins should be ready to join Milwaukee in May.

Of course, the Brewers have other starting outfielders who can play great defense as well. Sal Frelick, who won a Gold Glove in right field, can also play center, as can the oft-injured Garrett Mitchell, who is looking for his first healthy year in 2025.

Depth, though, is suddenly a question, one that Milwaukee seems to have already addressed.

According to reports, the Brewers have signed veteran outfielder Manuel Margot to a minor league contract. He is already present at Spring Training and, presumably, will start playing games soon.

A 30-year-old right-handed hitter, Margot could provide the Brewers with a better balance in an outfield that is flush with left-handed bats. Jackson Chourio, Milwaukee’s star corner outfielder, is the only right-handed hitter of the group now that the switch-hitting Perkins is sidelined.

That bat, however, was not great last year. Playing with the Minnesota Twins, Margot hit just .238/.289/.337 with four home runs, 31 RBI, and five stolen bases in 129 games. That being said, from 2016-2023, years spent with the San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays, he hit .255/.309/.385.

What makes Margot a sensible signing for the Brewers is his ability to play above-average defense at all three outfield positions. In 845 games played over nine seasons, he has committed only 22 errors and has a .987 fielding percentage. By comparison, Frelick had a .986 fielding percentage in right field last year when he won the Gold Glove.

Because he was signed to a minor league contract, and because he has over six years of MLB service, Margot has options to get out of the deal if he is not on the Brewers’ roster at various points in the season. Basically, he can elect to become a free agent again if he is not on the 40-man roster on March 22, May 1, or June 1.
