    Milwaukee Brewers: “Justice Equality Now”

The Milwaukee Brewers wrapped up their fun “Blue-Gold World Series” intrasquad scrimmages on July 21st, 2020. Three days before the shortened regular season begins.

Team Gold came away the winners, but the bigger story was the Brewers’ attire for the day.

    Suter Gets the Ball Rolling

Earlier in the day, Brewers pitcher Brent Suter tweeted out the following while wearing a shirt that says, “Justice Equality Now”.

For all who have been victims of oppression, suppression, or injustice, we demand justice and a fair shot at happiness in this life, NOW! These aren’t just words for the @Brewers but an action-oriented campaign to make this country better for all. #JusticeEqualityNow pic.twitter.com/rU8Dsed6z3

    The Team Picture

Two hours later, the Milwaukee Brewers social media accounts tweeted out a team photo with most of the position players wearing one. When the last Blue-Gold game began, the entire team wore the shirts for the duration of the game.

While the players didn’t state it was for a certain reason or cause, Suter did say during an in-game interview that the shirts were just a starting point and there will be more to come.

    Craig Counsell on the Shirts

Per Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) on Twitter, Craig Counsell said the team decided to create the t-shirts to wear for the final game.

“Today is our first day to send a message, and we will continue to do so in different ways throughout the year. It’s important to us. … It’s a great statement. It’s our take on it,” said Counsell.

More from Counsell: “I think anytime we’re trying to create some change, the message has to be consistent and it has to last. It can’t just be a one-day thing. Our goal in this is to create some consistency and today is the first day of it.”

“[Change] has to start somewhere, and today is the jumping-off place for us. I’m proud of the guys. I’m happy to be a part of it, and I’m hoping we can be, as much as anything, a part of a conversation. I think we’re hopefully helping to start do that today.”

    Fan Response

Many of the responses naturally became political or negative. Fans stated things like “stick to baseball” or “I will never buy tickets again”. There also appeared to be more overwhelming support and pride for the team for wearing them. But, the Milwaukee Brewers only wore the shirts. Things like “Justice” and “Equality” aren’t known to have a political side or agenda.

There aren’t a lot of details out yet. Supposedly, the Milwaukee Brewers appear to plan on doing several things during the 2020 season revolving equality or injustice causes and using the #JusticeEqualityNow hashtag. It’s something every Brewers fan should be proud of seeing.
