The Milwaukee Brewers knew that they were going to be in need of some quality starting pitching depth going into this past offseason. They just did not know, at the time, how badly they would need it early when four out of five of their projected starting pitchers went down with injuries before or in the early days of the season.
For this reason, Milwaukee pursued free agent left-handed pitcher, and a known Brewers killer, Jose Quintana in free agency. However, their negotiations took longer than expected and Quintana did not sign with them until after Spring Training had started.
As a result, Quintana did not make the Opening Day roster and, instead, accepted an extended Spring Training assignment that would allow him to ramp up for the year.
And ever since he joined the rotation, it has been crystal clear as to why the Brewers were willing to be patient.
Jose Quintana Has Won His First Three Starts for the Milwaukee Brewers

Quintana made his Brewers debut on April 11 on that road against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He picked up the win in that game, tossing seven innings of shutout ball while giving up four hits and striking out two.
His second start saw Quintana pitch in Milwaukee for the first time as a Brewer. He tossed 5.2 innings of one-run ball while walking three and striking out four. Once again, he earned the win.
On Tuesday night, the long-time veteran made his third start for the Brewers, and he performed exceptionally well again. Quintana pitched six innings, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out three in Milwaukee’s 11-3 win over the San Francisco Giants.
Obviously, he earned the win, his third of the season and third in his first three games. Fans may recall the last Brewers pitcher to win his first three starts with the team: one CC Sabathia, who was just elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this year:
Final: Brewers 11, Giants 3
Christian Yelich’s grand slam highlighted an eight-run sixth. And how about this? José Quintana is the first pitcher to win his first three games with the Brewers since CC Sabathia.
The record: 13-11

Sabathia, of course, was acquired in a mid-season trade back in 2008 and, quite literally, put the team on his back down the stretch and helped the Brewers make the postseason for the first time in 26 years.
Quintana, of course, is no CC Sabathia, but he has been exactly what the Brewers needed. He is the definition of a professional pitcher, a hurler who just knows how to get guys out, especially when they need to the most.
The former Brewers killer is now 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA in his first three starts for Milwaukee. When he pitches next, he will be attempting to tie Sabathia’s run of winning his first four starts with the team.
