Last season, the Milwaukee Brewers made a high-profile move ahead of the MLB trade deadline, acquiring reliever Shelby Miller from the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player to be named later. At the time of the deal, Miller was injured and rehabbing from an injury he suffered earlier in the season. However, he had already accumulated 10 saves and had a 1.98 ERA.
Unfortunately, his stint in Milwaukee did not last long and was not nearly as successful. Miller appeared in just 11 games and had a 5.59 ERA in that time. His season ended early with a UCL sprain that landed him on the 60-day injured list.
Now, Miller is a free agent and likely will not return to the Brewers. However, another player that was included in the deal is surprisingly reported to be in talks to pitch for Milwaukee in 2026.
The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly negotiating with Jordan Montgomery
One part of the Miller trade that was oftentimes overlooked was that Milwaukee also acquired left-handed starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery in the deal. However, since he had gotten Tommy John surgery earlier in the year, he never pitched for the Brewers.
Adding Montgomery and the $7.1 million left on his contract, though, allowed the Brewers to add Miller without having to give up a top prospect.
Many did not believe the former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher would ever don a Brewers uniform, but according to Travis Hudson, who is covering the Winter Meetings, Milwaukee and Montgomery are discussing a one-year deal for 2026:

Montgomery has a career record of 46-41 with a 4.03 ERA. He began his career with the New York Yankees and has also played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, and Diamondbacks.
In 2024, the last time he appeared in the Majors, he was 8-7 with a 6.23 ERA.
