Milwaukee Brewers infielder Joey Ortiz has become the seventh different player in franchise history since the year 2000 to win a Rookie of the Month award. During the month of May he slashed.307/.391/.587 that included 12 extra base hits. He also walked nine times and struck out on just 11 occasions.
Following MLB announcing that Joey Ortiz had won May’s Rookie of the Month award Milwaukee Brewers fans took to social media.

Not the breakout rookie everyone was expecting!

He has unofficially won best Rookie mustache of May. I have nothing to back that up other than my eyeballs.

Ortiz has blossomed into a promising young third baseman.
He’s made the most of his at-bats and done better with breaking balls than I initially anticipated, hats off to a great start in a young career.

Joey Ortiz was acquired during the Corbin Burnes trade with the Baltimore Orioles.

When the Brewers parted ways with Corbin Burnes in February of 2024 they received DL Hall, Joey Ortiz, and a 2024 MLB draft pick in return. So far this trade seems to be paying dividends for both organizations.
Has there ever been a 2 winner trade like Ortiz for Burnes? I am delighted for both teams/players

It’s early but looking like a rare, true win-win trade

Should Joey Ortiz be in consideration for Rookie of the Year?

Overall this season Joey Ortiz is slashing .293/.391/.503 with five home runs and 21 RBI. He has drawn 23 free passes while striking out just 25 times. His .894 season OPS is higher than other rookie stand outs like Michael Bush (.784), Masyn Winn (.774), and Jackson Merrill (.675). The biggest question will be if he can beat out pitching contenders like Paul Skenes, Shota Imanaga, Jared Jones, and Yoshinobu Yamamota.
If Joey Ortiz can hold onto his .391 OBP it’d be the sixth highest for a qualified rookie since the year 2000. The five guys ahead of him all had/have pretty impressive careers. https://t.co/mbQL6j2V6o pic.twitter.com/S9H3WpP2BM
