The Milwaukee Brewers, with Snoop Dogg in the house, defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 3-1. Joey Ortiz was the hero in this game as he blasted a three run home run in the fifth inning after initially squaring around to bunt. Post game he explained his reasoning and he indicated that from now on he will be looking to swing in those situations.

In the fifth inning Brewers third baseman Joey Ortiz put Milwaukee on top with a three run blast. This ended up being their only run producing swing of the game as they held on to win by a score of 3-1. This home run marked the sixth of the season for Joey Ortiz.
It’s a lively crowd at AmFam Field today, from Snoop’s pregame ovation to singing Livin’ on a Prayer between innings. The reigning NL Rookie of the Month gave them something to cheer about in the fifth inning. Joey Ortiz’s sixth homer of the season. pic.twitter.com/Fw742Ci9U8

Joey Ortiz squared around to bunt prior to hitting his three run home run against the Cincinnati Reds.
With two runners on base and nobody out in a tie game leadoff hitter Joey Ortiz squared around to bunt. This came a day after teammate Blake Perkins popped up on a bunt attempt to end the game. Ortiz ended up fouling the bunt off and then a few pitches later turning on a pitch for a three run home run. Post game he discussed his reasoning for bunting and also indicated that he will be looking to swing in those situations (video courtesy of David Gasper at Reviewing the Brew).
“I’ll be thinking to swing in that situation now”

The 2024 Milwaukee Brewers are bunting a lot.
Under previous manager Craig Counsell bunting was a foreign concept. New manager Pat Murphy has his players squaring around to bunt nightly. He has a roster full of speedy players and this can make fielding and playing bunts difficult for opposing teams. It’s not a bad strategy, but it does negate potential situations like what we saw with Joey Ortiz on Saturday against the Reds.
I would expect the Brewers to continue bunting, or at least squaring around to bunt, on a nightly basis. They have established this as part of their identity and there is no reason to stop now.
