The Milwaukee Brewers are almost certainly not done tinkering with their roster before the start of the 2025 MLB season. With spring training starting next month, though, there likely will not be any more major transactions by Milwaukee’s front office, not that they were in the market for a big free agent anyway.
Still, there are plenty of free agents still available, and many of them are within the Brewers’ price range. The problem is that most of them would never fit on Milwaukee’s roster, for a variety of reasons. Such was the case of one suggested signing put forward by Sports Illustrated.
The Milwaukee Brewers Are Urged to Sign Free Agent Joey Gallo
In a recent article, Patrick McAvoy suggested that Milwaukee go out and sign free agent first baseman/outfielder Joey Gallo, who spent last season with the Washington Nationals.
Gallo, who has played both corner outfield spots, first base, and third base in his Major League career certainly has one trait the Brewers like in players: the ability to play multiple positions. He also has, historically, been a decent power hitter and has two All-Star nods and a Gold Glove under his belt.
Of potentially signing Gallo, McAvoy writers, “The Brewers are a team that isn’t going to invest heavily in anyone most likely. Gallo is someone who could help add some power for a low cost. At this point, why not consider him?”
There are, actually, plenty of reasons why Milwaukee should not consider him.
Joey Gallo Would Be a Horrible Fit for the Milwaukee Brewers
While McAvoy suggests Gallo as a bench piece, there are other things to consider about him that simply make him a bad fit for the way the Brewers have currently constructed their roster.
For one thing, they already re-signed Jake Bauers, albeit on a minor league deal. That being said, Bauers was actually better than Gallo last season, and can steal bases, something that Murphy wants almost all of his players to be able to do.
But perhaps the biggest reason why the Brewers should avoid Gallo is this: he has not hit above .200 since 2019.
Since 2020, Gallo has a slash line of .179/.310/.404 while averaging 20 home runs and 43 RBI a season. That being said, the 38 home runs he hit in 2021 drastically inflated that average. Last year, he hit 10 with the Washington Nationals while appearing in 76 games. He also struck out 102 times in those 76 games.
For his career, Gallo has averages of .194/.319/.456.
Last season, Bauers hit .199/.201/.361 with 12 home runs, 43 RBI, and 13 stolen bases. He also plays first base and the corner outfield spots (and appeared in four games as a pitcher when scores were lopsided).
In other words, they are virtually the same player, with Bauers having more speed than Gallo. The fact that he is on a minor league deal makes him even more affordable.
