One of the best prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system is catcher Jeferson Quero. He missed most of the 2024 minor league season, but his 2023 minor league season is what gives this franchise hope for his future.
Jeferson Quero is only 22 years old and he was signed as an international free agent on July 2, 2019. It could be interesting to see whether or not Quero makes the Opening Day roster for the 2025 MLB season. Even with William Contreras as the starting catcher, Jeferson Quero could still make an impact for the Brewers this season.
Milwaukee Brewers Prospect Catcher Jeferson Quero Ranked 43 On Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects
Baseball of America released its Top 100 prospects ahead of the 2025 MLB season. Quero is ranked 43rd on this list and he is one of four Milwaukee Brewers prospects on the list. He bats from the right side of the plate and also throws from the right side.
Quero is 5’11” and weighs 215 lbs. Adam Zimmer of brewcrewball.com said about Quero being ranked in the Top 100 of Baseball America’s prospects once again:
“Quero’s inclusion is undoubtedly based on his standout 2023 with Double-A Biloxi. He won a minor league Gold Glove, ranking as one of the best defensive catchers in the minors by nearly every metric while slashing .262/.339/.440 at the plate. While he does a good job framing pitches, Biloxi’s opponents were absolutely terrified of his arm. Quero allowed a mere 1.03 stolen base attempts a game. His pop time (the time elapsed from the moment the ball hits the catcher’s mitt to the moment the intended fielder catches the ball) averaged around 1.9 seconds, which would have placed him in the top 10 in the MLB last year. Quero was widely expected to make his major league debut for Milwaukee sometime in 2024.
Unfortunately, the baseball gods had other plans. After drawing a walk in his first plate appearance at Triple-A Nashville last season, Quero dove back into first base to avoid a pickoff attempt. In the process, he dislocated his right arm, causing a labrum tear that caused him to miss the entire 2024 season. Since Quero’s injury was to his throwing arm, and labrum injuries can take a while to completely come back from, there has been some speculation that his arm won’t be what it was — at least initially. The uncertainty regarding his recovery (in addition to losing a full year of development to rehab) is most likely what caused him to fall in the rankings. However, if Quero proves to have regained his form behind the plate, you can expect to see him in the majors sometime in 2025.”
Quero during the 2023 minor league season had a .262 batting average with 16 home runs and 49 RBIs, along with five stolen bases. His on-base percentage was .339, his slugging percentage was .440, and his OPS was .779.
Jeferson Quero has a ton of potential in the major leagues. What he can’t have in 2025 is another setback from an injury. Quero needs to prove in spring training that he is ready to be on the Brewers roster for the long haul. There is a great chance that he will graduate from this list before the 2026 MLB season begins.
William Contreras
With Willy Adames gone, William Contreras will be the best hitter in the lineup and then Jackson Chourio may be the second-best hitter on the team. With Contreras being the starting catcher, Jeferson Quero could very well be the backup and there is a chance that they platoon now and then.
It would also not be a bad thing for Jeferson Quero to get at-bats with the Nashville Sounds in Triple-A to start the 2025 season instead of backing up Contreras on the bench. He needs repetitions after missing the entire 2024 season. Jefferson Quero will get a heavy look by the Milwaukee Brewers in spring training, but there is also a chance that Quero can play some catcher and Contreras could be the designated hitter during some games in 2025 as well.
