There was a time in the recent past when the Milwaukee Brewers had one of the deepest groups of outfielders in baseball. Now, though, many of those former prospects are on Milwaukee’s Major League roster. This group, of course, includes Sal Frelick, Jackson Chourio, and Garrett Mitchell.

Now, the majority of the Brewers’ top prospects are infielders. Whereas the outfield depth at one point was considered a major strength of the organization, now it is an area they are looking to improve. They did so again with an under-the-radar signing that was announced on Saturday.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Brewers have signed Jacob Hurtubise, formerly of the Cincinnati Reds, to a minor league contract. He has not been invited to be a part of Major League Spring Training. Instead, he has been assigned to Triple-A Nashville, where he will be an important outfield depth piece within the organization.

In 41 games over two seasons in the Majors with the Reds, Hurtubise has hit .167/.291/.212 with no home runs and four RBI.

In 56 games in Triple-A last season, Hurtubise hit .160/.350.200 with no home runs and 13 RBI.

Prior to turning professional, Hurtubise played his college ball at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He holds school and Patriot League records in career walks and stolen bases. In 2019, he was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year.

Hurtubise still has a minor league option remaining, so it is still possible that he could make an appearance in Milwaukee at some point during the season. However, he has a great deal of players ahead of him on the organizational depth chart:

    • Jackson Chourio
    • Sal Frelick
    • Garrett Mitchell
    • Blake Perkins
    • Brandon Lockridge
    • Akil Baddoo
    • Greg Jones
