The Milwaukee Brewers have had a very successful 2024 season up to this point. They have an 83-61 record so far this season and lead the Chicago Cubs (75-70 record) by 8.5 games in the National League Central. Milwaukee is not far away from winning the National League Central for the second straight season.
The Milwaukee Brewers are trying to catch the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers for one of the byes in the National League playoffs. Milwaukee will also have to make some interesting decisions about the roster once the 2024 season ends.
The Houston Astros Could Very Well Sign Milwaukee Brewers Shortstop Willy Adames After the Season
The Houston Astros could be making some moves this offseason to try and get the Milwaukee Brewers star shortstop, Willy Adames. Adames has played in 144 games so far this season for Milwaukee. He has a .253 batting average with 30 home runs and 102 RBIs, along with 18 stolen bases and four caught stealing attempts. His on-base percentage is .334.
According to Spotrac, Adames is projected to receive an eight-year contract worth $216 million. Matt Arnold, the Brewers general manager, will have to pay a hefty price to keep him around but they may not be able to afford him.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report thinks that the Astros could be in play for him. Miller said:
“And if (Alex Bregman) doesn’t sign it with Houston, where do the Astros turn. Eugenio Suárez on a short-term deal? Give Zach Dezenzo another shot after he struggled in recent weeks and got sent back down to Triple-A? Maybe they swing big for Willy Adames on a nine-figure deal and hope that either he or Jeremy Peña can slide effortlessly from short to third? Or, instead of worrying about third base, throw their hat in the ring for Pete Alonso to at least make sure one of their corner infielders can provide some serious offense?”
It would be a big loss for the Brewers’ offense if they lost Willy Adames in free agency. He would be hard to replace in the lineup for the 2025 season.
Shortstop Cooper Pratt is Still a Couple Of Years Away
Shortstop Cooper Pratt is one of the top prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system. It would be one thing if he was ready to be the Brewers shortstop for the 2025 season. That would be an easy decision for the Brewers organization.
However, Pratt will not be up in the big leagues until the 2026 or the 2027 season at the earliest. What will the Milwaukee Brewers do at shortstop if they can’t re-sign Willy Adames? Maybe they should try to sign Adames to a shorter three-to-four-year deal so they can keep one of the top bats in their lineup until Cooper Pratt is ready to take over the reins.
