A few former Milwaukee Brewers have been in the news recently due to their performances outside of the United States. First, former shortstop Alcides Escobar was named MVP of the championship series in the Dominican Professional Baseball League’s (LIDOM).
Secondly, and more recently, Hernan Perez has been doing all he can to keep his team in the finals of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional, or LVBP).

In typical Brewers fashion, the team in 2015 turned Hernán Pérez, a waiver claim previously from the Detroit Tigers, into a player with a prominent role. Pérez’s ability to play virtually every position, combined with Milwaukee’s rebuilding phase at the time, helped his case.
Over his tenure with the organization, which lasted through 2019 and included some very competitive Brewers teams, he became a well-liked and valued presence in the clubhouse. He failed to find that same niche outside of Milwaukee, briefly rejoined the club in 2021 on a minor league deal, but then continued to bounce around organizations through the 2024 season.
In 2025, Perez didn’t latch onto a team in the United States. He made appearances in the Venezuelan Winter League and Caribbean Series, but didn’t perform well. However, this winter, things have been much different. Through 89 games in the Mexican League, he posted a .312/.388/.556 with 19 home runs. He’s followed that up with a .313/.383/.480 slash line in Venezuela, where his team is currently in the finals.

As things stand currently, Perez’s team Caribes de Anzotegu, is down 3-1 in the series and facing elimination. Regardless of the outcome, the 34-year-old Pérez is thriving. The biggest question is whether his performance will be enough to earn him a potential return to affiliated baseball after a year away.
