The Milwaukee Brewers are playing their best baseball of the season thus far. With their 9-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday afternoon, Milwaukee is now 21-10 in their last 31 games, the best record in all of Major League Baseball during that stretch. What is more, they have scored 26 runs over their last two games without hitting a single home run. It is just the third time since World War II that has happened.
Over the past month or so, the Brewers have seen star hitters like Jackson Chourio and Christian Yelich become more consistent at the plate. And while this certainly helps their offense overall, other everyday players have started to show signs of improvement as well.
One of these is Isaac Collins who, entering play on Saturday, was hitting .294/.442/.647 with three home runs and nine RBI in the month of June.
Isaac Collins Has Gotten More Playing Time for the Milwaukee Brewers Since Garrett Mitchell Got Hurt
Collins has been getting a great deal of playing time in left field lately following centerfielder Garrett Mitchell injuring his oblique and landing on the injured list. Mitchell’s injury forced manager Pat Murphy to insert Chourio as the everyday centerfielder and trying out both Collins (a switch hitter) and Jake Bauers (a left-handed hitter) at the position.
The 27-year-old Collins, who made his Major League debut with the Brewers last season, is still considered a rookie and is easily playing the best baseball of his young career.
He has been playing so well, in fact, that it appeared as if Murphy was going to have a difficult decision on his plate soon as both Mitchell and Blake Perkins, who was injured during Spring Training, began rehab assignments.
That decision, unfortunately, has become a lot easier given the latest report out of Nashville.
Milwaukee Brewers Outfielder Garrett Mitchell Is Hurt Again
Recently, Mitchell and Perkins were sent to Triple-A Nashville to begin rehab assignments. And while Perkins continues to progress towards a return to Milwaukee, Mitchell as suffered a setback.
Murphy told reporters on Saturday that the Brewers outfielder injured his shoulder sliding back into first base in the Sounds’ game on Friday night.

Garrett Mitchell injured his left (surgically repaired) shoulder diving back into a base last night at Class AAA Nashville.
Early imaging inconclusive, and he is being pulled off his rehab assignment.

This news is unfortunate for Mitchell, who at the time of his oblique injury was hitting just .206/.286/.294 with three RBI in 25 games with the Brewers.
Ever since he made it to the Majors in 2022, Mitchell has struggled to stay healthy. He was limited to 19 games in 2023 after injuring his shoulder while sliding into third base, similar to his current injury. Last season, he missed the start of the year after breaking his thumb in Spring Training.
With Chourio and Sal Frelick entrenched in the outfield for years to come, and with a steady flow of quality players to compliment them, it will be difficult for Mitchell to get regular playing time in Milwaukee, especially if he cannot stay healthy.
