Milwaukee Brewers rookie outfielder Garrett Mitchell is off to a torrid start to Spring Training. Though early, he is hitting .444/.444/1.096 with two home runs and five RBI. With Tyrone Taylor expected to miss the first month of the season, it is entirely possible that Mitchell will enter 2023 as the Brewers’ starting centerfielder. After hitting .311/.373/.459 in his first taste of Big League action, expectations are high going into what will be his full rookie campaign. Mike Heller of 97.3 The Game was able to discuss the offseason and these expectations with Mitchell on Thursday.
Garrett Mitchell Is Approaching Spring Training Differently This Year

The first thing that Heller asked Mitchell was how his approach to Spring Training is different this year compared to last. After all, Mitchell is competing for a starting outfield spot on the Major League roster this year. Last year, it was a foregone conclusion that he would start the season in the Minors.
“I went from not being in camp last year to now I’m working for, vying for a starting spot. So I’m just paving my own way.
“[The end of the season] made me realize what I needed to work on more. I think on the minor league side, I felt pretty solid on how it all ended up, but once I got to the Big Leagues, more of it was just seeing what I had done in such a short time, all the good things, but also seeing what I needed to work on.
“One of those being my timing, getting in rhythm, getting able to actually be aggressive with pitches. I would say I was pretty much exposed to fastballs that were left up last year, you know, thrown hard and in. So I think that if I get my foot down on time, I’m able to cover those pitches maybe a little bit easier. I’m not really fighting with myself. And also, learning more and more about my swing.”
Heller’s interview with Mitchell also revealed that Rowdy Tellez is going to be this year’s resident prankster in the clubhouse, which is also fun for fans to follow throughout the season.
