The Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals played a rubber match day game on Wednesday, August 2. Milwaukee went ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning off a Christian Yelich double and entered the ninth inning with a chance to win the game and series.
Taking the hill to close the game out was trusted closing pitcher Devin Williams. Unfortunately the Brewers were unable to record an out in the ninth inning, they committed two errors, and lost by a score of 3-2. Here’s how the ninth inning unfolded.

Milwaukee Brewers lose 3-2 against the Washington Nationals thanks to a disastrous ninth inning.
Leading off the ninth inning was pinch hitter Corey Dickerson. On the seventh pitch of the at-bat he laced a liner at first baseman Carlos Santana. Unfortunately the ball went right through his legs and he was charged with an error on the play.
Following this Dominic Smith found himself in a 1-2 count and he half hardheartedly swung at a cutter up in the zone that found grass for a single. Up third in the inning was pinch hitter Keibert Ruiz who ended up drawing a walk on six pitches to load the bases.
This set up what would be the final play of the game. With Alex Call at the plate he hit a ground ball to third base. Andruw Monasterio fielded it cleanly but threw wide of William Contreras at home plate. He was unable to retrieve it and throw it back to a covering Devin Williams in time before the winning run crossed home plate.

This loss is a tough one for the Brewers, who have lost possession of first place in the National League Central to the Cincinnati Reds. They do have a big chance to redeem themselves coming up as their next 10 games are against below .500 teams in the Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies, and Chicago White Sox.
