After a good month of April the Milwaukee Brewers have stumbled a bit through the first 10 days of May. The team is 2-7 since the calendar changed and they have lost five out of their last six series. It’s hard to know how long this funk will last, but the longer it continues the more likely we are to see roster changes.
In this article we will take a look at two Milwaukee Brewers players who could be off the roster by memorial day.
The first player to consider is Luke Voit. After a monster spring the Brewers signed him to a big league contract. As a result of this the team designated Keston Hiura for assignment, but he cleared waivers and remained with the organization by being demoted to the minor leagues.
Results wise this season Voit is slashing a dismal .222/.279/.569. He has just three extra base hits and three free passes. To make matters worse he is striking out 35% of the time. The former home run champion is still searching for his first home run of the 2023 season and with the way Keston Hiura is hitting at Triple-A Nashville it may be worth giving him another look at the big league level.
A second player who is in danger of being removed from the roster by Memorial Day is pitcher Gus Varland. The Rule-5 draft selection recently returned from a hand contusion, but he struggled in his debut back with the Brewers as well as during his rehab appearances. At this point in the season his leash may be short and Milwaukee could elect to give that roster spot to a different pitcher if he continues to struggle.
It will be interesting to see if the Brewers make any moves in the near future or not. Their team record currently sits at 20-17 and is creeping dangerously close to .500. The front office may take action sooner rather than later.
