The ride is over for the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2024 MLB season. It looked as though they were going to advance into the National League Division Series when they established a two-run lead in the seventh inning of their matchup versus the New York Mets on Thursday. But disaster struck the Brewers in the ninth inning, with Devin Williams giving up four runs.
The Mets showed incredible resilience in the ninth inning, with Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, and Pete Alonso joining forces to put New York ahead.
Despite the pain of the loss, Murphy still gave a classy statement that also serves as a great example of what sportsmanship is all about.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s baseball,” Murphy said during the postgame press conference when asked about the emotions he had in the ninth inning.
“You got three players that are upper echelon players and [Francisco] Lindor, [Brandon] Nimmo, and [Pete] Alonso. And, you know, they did what they do. Walk a base, hit opposite-field homer,” continued Murphy.
“They did what they do. And I want to credit the Mets. That’s what that inning was about, and it was about the Mets. And they were great. And those three players are All-Stars. They have long-term contracts for a reason. You know, they’re great players and they’ve been through a hell of a ride here having to play the extra games and all the credit goes to goes to the Mets.”

Down 2-0 in the ninth frame, the Mets saw Lindor take a walk to kick things off in the inning. After Mark Vientos struck out, Nimmo had a single that pushed Lindor to third base. Enter Alonso, who launched a three-run home run that went 367 feet deep to give the Mets the lead. Starling Marte also had an RBI single to drive Jesse Winker home to add some insurance for the Mets, who won to the tune of a 4-2 score.
Fans react to Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy’s classy statement
“He seems like such a class act from every interview clip I have seen.”
“Damn this is classy, almost makes me feel bad. Murphy and Chourio gonna change the Brewers lack of postseason success sooner rather than later. Great manager and a generational player. Respect”
“That’s sportsmanship right there.”
“Very classy guy. Respect”
“between mendoza and murphy i don’t think i’ve ever seen two more respectful, professional, down-to-earth managers in the league”
