Star closer Devin Williams is now with the New York Yankees after he was traded to the Bronx by the Milwaukee Brewers this December. The Brewers sent Williams to the Big Apple in exchange for pitcher Nestor Cortes, shortstop Caleb Durbin and cash considerations.
Williams, however, admitted that he initially thought that he was going to stay in the National League, thinking that the Brewers would get him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“I kind of thought I’d be going to L.A.,” Williams, 30, said. “That was what I was being told, and the Yankees snuck in there under the table and got the deal done.”
The deal was Williams to the Yankees for left-hander Nestor Cortes, prospect Caleb Durbin and cash. So, instead of joining the World Series champion Dodgers, Williams landed on the team the Dodgers defeated for the title.
Fans shared their reactions to ex-Milwaukee Brewers star’s revelation
As expected, Williams’ admission generated a lot of reactions online. Here are some of them:
“Ngl, it sounds alot like Devin Williams had his heart set on being a Dodger before New York swooped in. RIP Devin Williams’ beard in a few months,” shared a fan.
One fan said: “Wow! Well he was almost traded to a winner”
“Curious to know which location he would have preferred … know he’ll never publicly say, but wouldn’t you rather join the beat-ER than the beat-EE??” another fan commented.
Via a different reaction: “Man, he would’ve looked so good in Dodger Blue. Time to pivot and go after Tanner Scott.”
“Imagine thinking you’re going to the World Series in 2025 then being told you’re going to the ALDS exit instead,” chimed in another commenter.
In any case, the Yankees seem to have found their guy in Williams, whom New York hopes will stabilize its bullpen. A two-time All-Star, Williams owns a career 1.83 ERA to go with 68 saves across 241 games and 235.2 innings.
