The Milwaukee Brewers are heading into the 2023 season with one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball. Led by 2021 NL Cy Young winner, Corbin Burnes, the staff includes All-Stars Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta, as well as left-handed pitchers Eric Lauer and Wade Miley. This will likely be the last season that the Brewers have such a staff, as Burnes is a free agent following the 2024 season. This fact led to a false report on Twitter that had Brewers fans in a frenzy.
MLB Reporter Jon Heyman Falsely Claims Corbin Burnes Will Be a Free Agent after This Season
Recently, Burnes hired BorasCorp, the agency company owned and ran by the incomparable Scott Boras, to represent him. This led Jon Heyman to Tweet:
Brewers ace Corbin Burnes has hired BorasCorp to represent him. The former Cy Young winner is a free agent at the end of the season.

As seen in the Tweet above, Heyman incorrectly claims that Burnes is going to be a free agent at the end of this season. That simply is not the case. Burnes’ arbitration years run through 2024, which means he will be a free agent after next season. As one might imagine, Brewers fans had a field day with this Tweet:
You'd think he'd get the year right when he gets the news directly from the source https://t.co/K7OFphn20Q

Brewers might as well get the inevitable over with and trade him now and hope to get 75 cents on the dollar, because he ain’t ever gonna sign an extension let alone re-sign. https://t.co/fQIYlOqFt3

Jon has the free agent year wrong (next season, not this season), but this is where things were always going to end up. Nothing less than $250-300 million for Burnes. https://t.co/F3IC1Faqy9

To be fair, Heyman did quote-tweet himself with a correction:
Correction: Burnes is a free agent after next season, meaning the 2024 season. https://t.co/c1pVjGk0bZ

As mentioned previously, this will likely be Burnes’ final season with the Brewers. Not because he will be a free agent at the end of the season, but because the team will likely look to trade him in the offseason. An in-season trade would turn out to be a disaster, much like the Josh Hader trade was last season. For this reason, it is far more likely that the Brewers will make one final push with Burnes and Woodruff before offloading them in the offseason.
In short, enjoy this pitching staff while they have it.
