Milwaukee Brewers star closer Devin Williams did not exactly memorably end his 2024 MLB season, as he blew a save against Pete Alonso and the New York Mets in Game 3 of a National League Wild Card game.
And while there is a chance for him to atone for that blunder with the Brewers, it is also possible that he’s already thrown his final pitch for the only team he’s played so far in his career in the big leagues.
Will the Milwaukee Brewers trade Devin Williams before 2025 MLB season?
Williams is among the intriguing players of the offseason, with trade rumors constantly linked to the two-time All-Star.
Just recently, David Schoenfield of ESPN shared some potential landing spots for Williams should Milwaukee decide to split ways with the reliever before the start of the 2025 MLB season.
One trade option: closer Devin Williams, who will earn close to $8 million in his final year of arbitration. The Brewers could just run out the clock with him, as they did with Adames. Or they could trade him before free agency, as they did with Josh Hader. But what they probably won’t want to do is trade Williams in the middle of the season, as they did with Hader in 2022. Trade candidates could include the Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Dodgers and Phillies, among others.
Despite his ugly finish to the 2024 postseason, Williams posted strong numbers this year overall. The 30-year-old Williams had a 1.25 ERA and 0.969 WHIP along with 14 saves through 21.2 innings.
Over his last two seasons, Williams has garnered a solid .130 opponents batting average and a .211 BABIP along with a 39.2 percent strikeout rate and 12.2 percent walk rate.
