The Milwaukee Brewers lost 7-4 in the 12th inning on Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. Manager Pat Murphy utilized six different relievers in this game. Aaron Ashby, Trevor Megill, and Devin Williams got the game into extra innings and then Joel Payamps got the 10th, Jared Koenig the 11th, and Elvis Peguero the 12th.
Unfortunately for Elvis Peguero, who had just been recalled that day, he allowed three runs to score and the Brew Crew were unable to answer during the bottom of the inning. Following the game Pat Murphy was asked about Peguero faltering in an all too familiar situation but indicated that he will get another chance.
How did the 12th inning unfold for Elvis Peguero against the St. Louis Cardinals?
With the game tied at four and a ghost runner on second base Elvis Peguero began the 12th inning by issuing a walk (nine pitch at-bat). He then threw a wild pitch and allowed a two RBI base knock to make it 6-4. From there a base runner stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error from William Contreras. The runner from third eventually scored on a SAC fly. Peguero did get the other two outs of the inning via a pair of strikeouts.
Elvis Peguero has struggled when entering the game with runners on base this year.
In the middle of August the Milwaukee Brewers optioned Elvis Peguero to the Minor Leagues. On the surface this move came as a bit of a shock as he had a 3.00 ERA on the season at that time. However he had been struggling in not allowing inherited runners to score. This year 24% of the time he has entered the game with inherited runners on base and 63% of them have come around to score.
The Milwaukee Brewers will be giving Elvis Peguero another chance.
Elvis Peguero was recalled from Triple-A at the same time that Hoby Milner was activated off the injured list, Bryse Wilson was placed on the injured list, and Bryan Hudson was optioned to the Minor Leagues. Following the game manager Pat Murphy acknowledged that it was a tough situation for Peguero to be in during his first day back, but he will get another chance.
Tonight’s outing is an indication of, hey, how far has he come? What’s he done? It was a tough spot to be put in on the first day back. It won’t be his last outing. He’ll get another chance.
