Devin Williams, an elite closer for the Milwaukee Brewers, had one of his worst career innings in the big leagues at the worst possible time. On Thursday night, during an elimination game of the Wild Card series, the New York Mets tagged him with four earned runs in which Pete Alonso gave them the lead with a three run home run. After this melt down rumors surfaced that he was tipping his pitches.
Where did the rumor start that Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams was tipping his pitches against the New York Mets?
Speculation about Devin Williams tipping his pitches appears to have originated from Jomboy Media. Creator James O’Brien had this theory, he ran it by one of his colleagues and former MLB player Trevor Plouffe, and provided video evidence of what he thought.
How was Devin Williams allegedly tipping his pitches?
Per Jomboy a few things were noticeably different about Williams setup on the mound when throwing a fastball versus a changeup. Glove position was the biggest thing mentioned in which when throwing a heater Williams’ glove was slightly higher and his hand was positioned deeper inside the glove. With a changeup the glove was lower and his hand was not as far inside his glove.
Was Devin Williams actually tipping his pitches?
Neither ball club has came out and said that Williams was tipping his pitches, but Jomboy did provide some lip reading during his seven minute video breakdown that suggests the Mets picked up on the subtle differences mentioned above.
Jomboy’s full video breakdown is provided below. You can be the judge as to if Williams was tipping his pitches or not.
